Fitness in Alanya: What to Know Before You Choose a Gym

How to choose a gym in Alanya: prices, reformer pilates, personal trainers, daily passes for holidaymakers and Royal Gym in Kestel.

The sentence we hear most from people walking into the gym for the first time is this: "I really want to start training, but I don't know where to begin." Sometimes it comes from someone who has lived in Alanya for years. Sometimes it's a guest on a two-week holiday who doesn't want to lose their routine.

Working out in Alanya isn't quite like working out anywhere else. In summer the temperature climbs past 35°C, the town's population doubles with the season, and the day really starts in the late afternoon. In this article we share, from our own experience, what to look for when choosing a gym, how to make your first weeks easier, and the questions people ask us most often.

What makes training in Alanya different

The climate shapes how people train here. In July and August, running outside at midday is close to impossible. That's why one of the first things to check when choosing a gym in Alanya is whether it stays cool and well ventilated.

The second factor is the season. From April to October the town comes alive, and so do the gyms. Between 18:00 and 21:00 almost every gym is at its busiest. Early mornings and early afternoons are usually much quieter. If your schedule is flexible, use that: you won't wait for machines and your workout will take less time.

The third factor is the visitors. In an Alanya gym it's completely normal to hear English, Russian, German and Polish alongside Turkish. For people who don't want to skip training on holiday, a short-term pass isn't a luxury here — it's a necessity.

How to spot a good gym on your first visit

You don't need to sign up to judge a gym. On your first visit, just pay attention to these details:

  • The air: If you walk in and are hit by heavy sweat smell or stuffy heat, training there in summer will be hard.
  • Equipment variety: Not just a few machines — there should be a free-weights area, cardio equipment and open space for functional training.
  • Crowds: Drop by once at the time you plan to train. If you're queuing for every machine, your motivation will fade quickly.
  • Trainer attention: Is there someone you can ask questions? For beginners this matters even more than the equipment.
  • Cleanliness and order: Weights left lying around, machines nobody wipes down, neglected changing rooms — small things, but they define your day-to-day experience.
  • Getting there: A gym far from your home or work, however good it is, turns into "I'll go tomorrow" within a few weeks.

Our advice: before you decide, see the gym once at the time you actually plan to go. It tells you more than any price list or photo.

A few realistic tips for your first month

Most beginners start the first week full of energy and quit by the third. The reason usually isn't a lack of willpower — it's doing too much too soon. Here's how we suggest you start:

  1. Three days a week is enough. You don't need to come every day in your first month. A steady rhythm such as Monday, Wednesday and Friday works far better than five days in a row followed by a week off.
  2. Don't skip the warm-up. Ten minutes of light cardio and a few mobility exercises significantly lower your risk of injury.
  3. Learn technique before adding weight. Once your form is right, increasing the weight becomes easy. Never hesitate to ask a trainer about a movement you're unsure of.
  4. Keep your water bottle close. In Alanya's humid air you lose more fluid than you think, even in an air-conditioned gym.
  5. Write down your progress. Noting which exercise you did, with how much weight and for how many reps, keeps your motivation alive.

You don't have to stop training on holiday

Many of our guests who come to Alanya for a week or two look for a gym so they don't break their routine. A monthly membership makes little sense for them. That's why Royal Gym offers daily and weekly short-term passes. You can come for a single workout or use the gym every day of your holiday.

Hotel gyms usually stop at a couple of treadmills and some dumbbells. If you want a proper workout, joining a fully equipped gym for a few days is the easiest way to stay in shape without spoiling your holiday.

For women: training in your own space

Some of our female members tell us openly that they feel hesitant about starting in a mixed gym. That's completely understandable. Royal Gym has a women-only training area. You can start somewhere you feel more comfortable and, over time, use the other areas of the gym as well.

Reformer pilates and EMS: who are they for?

Interest in reformer pilates has grown a lot in Alanya in recent years. Performed on a spring-loaded machine, it's very effective for improving posture, strengthening the core and increasing flexibility. Because it's easy on the joints, it also suits people who avoid weight training or are returning to exercise after a long break.

At Royal Gym, reformer pilates sessions are one-to-one with an instructor. You don't get lost in a crowded class; the instructor works with you for the whole session, at your level and around any sensitive areas you may have.

EMS training appeals to people who want an intense workout in a short time. It's popular with busy members who can't spend hours at the gym. If you have back, neck or cardiovascular problems, please talk to your doctor before starting pilates or EMS.

Do you really need a personal trainer?

Not everyone does. But if any of the following apply to you, working with a personal trainer in Alanya for a few weeks will save you a lot of time:

  • You've never trained regularly before,
  • You have a specific goal (losing weight, building muscle, preparing for a competition),
  • You're coming back after a long break or an injury,
  • You've been doing the same programme for years without progress.

The biggest benefit of one-to-one training is learning the right technique from the start. After a few weeks with a trainer, many of our members carry on with their own programme. Royal Gym offers one-to-one personal training as single sessions or weekly packages.

What do gym prices in Alanya depend on?

There's no single answer to "How much does a gym cost in Alanya?", because several things shape the price:

  • Membership length: The monthly cost drops noticeably with longer memberships.
  • Time of use: Some gyms offer cheaper packages for the quieter daytime hours. Royal Gym also has more affordable packages valid until 17:00.
  • Extra services: Personal training, reformer pilates and EMS are usually charged on top of the membership.
  • Facilities: A gym with a sauna, separate training areas and lounges naturally won't cost the same as one with basic equipment.

You can find all our current prices on the Prices page. If you're not sure which package suits you, just message us on WhatsApp. We'll listen to how you plan to train and find the most sensible option together.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best time of year to start training in Alanya?

Any season works, but October to May is the most comfortable period, both for the weather and for how busy gyms are. If you want to start in summer, we recommend early mornings.

Is it a problem if I'm overweight or very out of shape?

Not at all. Most people who walk into a gym are there to start somewhere. Nobody is watching you — everyone is busy with their own workout.

I'm on holiday — can I train for just a few days?

Yes. Our daily and weekly short-term passes exist exactly for that. You can come to the gym and start the same day.

Do I need pilates experience to try reformer pilates?

No. Because the sessions are one-to-one, the instructor starts you from scratch at your own level.

Do I need an appointment to sign up?

No, you can come straight to the gym during opening hours. If you have any questions before your visit, just send us a WhatsApp message.
